CHAMPAIGN, IL (KMOV.com) -- Wisconsin's womens' basketball team jumped on the Illinois early on the first day of 2009.
The Badgers took and early lead and never trailed in a 53-38 win before 1,352 fans at the Assembly Hall Thursday.
Wisconsin's (12-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) only had one player score in double figures-Alyssa Karel with 13 points-but had eight players register baskets. On the other hand, Jenna Smith led the Illini (4-10 overall, 0-3 Big Ten) with 21 points but only had four other players score. Lacey Simpson (eight points) was the only other member of the Illini to record at least five points.
Illinois finished the game shooting 25% from the field and 20% behind the 3-point arc. The Badgers hit 50% of their shots from 3-point range and finished hitting 37.2% from the field.
Wisconsin began the game jumping out to a 6-2 lead and expanded it to 28-17 at halftime. The Illini were able to close it to a four-point game 17-13 in the first half, but could not get any closer. A 30-17 score at the beginning of the second half was the closest Illinois got.
The Illini return to the Assembly Hall on January 3 at 11:00 CT. The game will be broadcast nationally on CBS and fans are encouraged to support the team and "Pack the Hall."
