Benefit set for sisters killed in trooper wreck

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Organizers hope a weekend fundraiser helps build scholarship funds in the memory of two southwestern Illinois sisters killed in a 2007 freeway collision with an Illinois state trooper.

The $20-a-person fundraising dance, dinner and silent auction will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Collinsville's Knights of Columbus hall in name of Jessica and Kelli Uhl.

Authorities say Trooper Matt Mitchell was driving his patrol car more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 64 east of St. Louis on Nov. 23, 2007, when it went out of control and crossed the median.

His car then slammed into one occupied by 18-year-old Jessica Uhl and 13-year-old Kelli Uhl of Collinsville.

Mitchell is charged with reckless homicide and reckless driving. He has pleaded not guilty.
