East St. Louis park with scenic view of Arch set to open

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- After years in the making, a park with a four-story overlook giving visitors a panoramic view of the Gateway Arch and the rest of St. Louis' skyline is ready to debut in East St. Louis.

The 34-acre park scheduled to open to the public tomorrow is named after Malcolm Woods Martin. Until his death in 2004, he sought to achieve what the arch's architect always wanted -- a sprawling park on the East St. Louis side of the river to complement and marvel at the landmark.

The new park also includes the Gateway Geyser, which shoots a stream of water skyward nearly as high as the 630-foot arch itself.

The new park was largely paid for privately, and East St. Louis' mayor hopes it stokes more riverfront development in his struggling city.
