Budget talks continuing in Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn and top lawmakers are set to continue talking about an alternative budget as the new fiscal year quickly approaches.

They are expected to meet again Wednesday, the latest in a series of gatherings since the Democrat-controlled Legislature passed a budget without enough money for state government.

Quinn is pushing lawmakers to come up with an alternative budget by July 1, when the new fiscal year starts.

He wants lawmakers to pass an income tax increase to balance the budget but he doesn't have enough support.

Critics contend the state needs to look for more cost savings and make government run more efficiently before looking for more money in a tax increase.
