New Ill. governor turns to old friends, colleagues

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Suddenly handed the job of running Illinois government, Pat Quinn has turned to familiar faces to build a new administration.

He brought along aides from the lieutenant governor's office and recruited old friends. So far, he's brought in only a couple of relative strangers.

This strategy's allowed him to start work quickly under challenging circumstances and to be certain of the loyalties of key aides.

But it also raises questions, including whether his team has the experience to tackle the state's many problems?

Quinn, for instance, picked a 29-year-old with no background in law enforcement to oversee the state police.

Quinn himself told The Associated Press in a recent interview that he believes people are looking for fresh air in government and that the people he's brought in are of high character and ability.
