(KMOV.com) – A Republican Representative from Utah has sponsored a legislative proposal to punish federal workers who owe back taxes.

The bill would amend current tax codes to say that persons having seriously delinquent tax debts are ineligible for Federal employment.

The language in the bill states “any person who has a seriously delinquent tax debt shall be ineligible to be appointed or to continue serving as an employee.”

In the bill, ‘seriously delinquent’ is classified as any outstanding debt for which a public lien has been filed.

The bill’s sponsor, Representative Jason Chaffetz, also sponsored legislation proposing no government contracts or grants should be awarded to individuals or companies with seriously delinquent Federal tax debts.

According to The Washington Post, the first bill faced Democratic opposition in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, but the second passed with support from both parties.
