(KMOV) – After an EF2 tornado ripped through a Hazelwood neighborhood, police are making their presence known in the storm ravaged area.

Several streets will be blocked off only to those residents as concerns over burglary and looting increase. Many people left their homes due to the loss of power, and are staying with family, friends or checking into a nearby hotel.

Some residents were standing ready to protect their property from possible crime. One resident was spotted by News 4’s Matt Sczesney sitting on his front porch, armed with a licensed weapon.

“I’m trying to keep my house safe and keep people from looting. I don’t know what’s down the street but I’m trying to protect my home,” Mark Redenbaux told Sczesney.

The cleanup continued into Thursday night in Hazelwood and will likely go on for days or weeks for some.

Police tell News 4, so far there are no problems with anyone trying to steal or loot. Officers plan to keep it that way until the lights come back on and the property owners can return home.
