Wainwright regroups from early struggles vs. Giants

(BaseballStL) -- A triple to the first batter of the game wasn’t the way Adam Wainwright wanted to start out against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. But it happened and he managed to work around it.

Angel Pagan, who hit the leadoff triple in the first inning, didn’t get past third base after Wainwright struck out the next two batters, Marco Scutaro and Pablo Sandoval, and got Buster Posey to ground out to end the inning. No damage allowed in the opening frame.

After mowing down the three batters in the second inning, Wainwright found himself in trouble in the third after tossing a leadoff double to Brandon Crawford. A sac bunt by Matt Cain followed by a double from Angel Pagan gave the Giants a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Sandoval singled home Pagan for a 2-0 lead.

All of the momentum was going the Giants’ way since the pre-game World Series ring ceremony.

A nine-run fourth inning from the Cardinals gave Wainwright plenty of support to quiet the Giants bats before being pulled after the seventh inning.

It took 44 pitches, including 29 strikes, to get through the first three innings. He needed only 57 pitches to get through the next four innings.

His final line: 7 innings pitched, 7 hits allowed, 2 runs (both earned) and 6 strikeouts.
