(BaseballStL) -- Matt Cain may have a hard time getting the St. Louis Cardinals hitters out of his head after being charged with allowing nine runs in the fourth inning.

Cain, who mowed down the first nine batters, was tapped for seven hits and two walks in the inning after the San Francisco Giants took a 2-0 lead the inning before.

It was a far cry from his first start of the season when he hurled six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and struck out eight against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The three-time NL All-Star hasn’t been successful against the Cardinals in his career. Prior to Sunday, Cain was 2-3 with a 4.94 earned run average in eight games (47.1 innings pitched) against St. Louis. He went 1-1 with a 6.94 earned run average in two starts last season against the Cardinals.

His last loss, oddly enough, came against the Cardinals on August 6, 2012 when he allowed five runs and eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

The Cardinals beat the Giants 14-3.
