Mississippi River search suspended overnight; 2 adults still missing

(KMOV.com) -- Police and fire crews suspended their search for two missing people Saturday night after a small boat capsized near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say the accident happened on the Mississippi River near Hartford, Ill. around 1 p.m.

Three people were reportedly inside the boat when it overturned, throwing them into the river. Police said a 10-year-old boy was pulled from the river by barge workers, but two adults remain missing.

St. Charles County, Missouri Highway Patrol and Hartford, Ill. police worked with firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct an extensive search on the river. The search was called off Saturday night, but will resume Sunday morning.

Rescue crews said wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour made for dangerous conditions on the river. Officials did not say whether the wind caused the boat to overturn.

A staging area for the search was established in Hartford, located about seven miles south of Alton along the Mississippi River.

News 4 crews are on the scene gathering more information. Check KMOV.com for the latest updates on this developing story.
