(KMOV.com) -- Heart disease and cancer are no longer the most costly diseases in the U.S according to a new study.

Researchers published in the New England Journal of Medicine cite dementia as the most expensive issue the health care system treats.

According to the study, the cost of treating and caring for people with dementia ranges from $157 billion to $215 billion annually.

The biggest part of that expense is not medical services, but providing long-term care in institutions and at home.
