KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—An eastern Missouri woman who claimed to have terminal cancer has pleaded guilty to forging a doctor’s signature as part of the hoax.

Twenty-three-year-old Victoria Ann Marut of St. Peters pleaded guilty Monday in a plea deal that included dropping a related charge of stealing.

Prosecutors are recommending Marut be placed on probation when she is sentenced June 3.

She was a student at Truman State University in Kirksville when she claimed to have terminal cancer. The hoax was uncovered when a principal at a grade school where Marut was doing field work became suspicious.

Marut will be required to pay restitution for gifts she received from supporters in response to her claims of being sick.
