ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Waldemar Klasing didn't spend much money in life, but he is generous in death.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Klasing, who died last month at age 100, left gifts amounting to more than $1 million to Washington University. The money is for scholarships and the School of Engineering, where he graduated in 1938.

Klasing had lived in the same Webster Groves home for 70 years. He lived for years without air-conditioning. He turned off the refrigerator every two hours to save electricity. The home was dark because he refused to use anything brighter than a 20-watt bulb.
