(KMOV)—The Missouri Department of Transportation will close Interstate 270 to blast away the surrounding rock walls. The closures will last throughout the summer.
Demolition crews begin work on Tuesday to blast away parts of the rock wall that line I-270. The blasting will close the interstate in both directions between Big Bend and Manchester Road,
Several feet of rock wall will be blasted twice-a-day starting at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.. Crews will then set the charges in place, trigger the blast and eventually remove the rock. The interstate will be closed for 15 minutes each time before traffic will be allowed to flow through the area.
On Tuesday, MoDOT officials cancelled the blasting scheduled for 1:30 p.m., but report it is only cancelled for Tuesday.
MoDOT crews will add another lane, in each direction, on I-270 between Interstate 44 and Manchester to ease traffic slowdowns.
The blasting is scheduled to take place each weekday throughout the summer months on the east side of I-270. Next summer, MoDOT plans on moving to the west side to continue blasting.
