Cards take P Wacha, OF Ramsey in first round

ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – With their first pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals selected pitcher Michael Wacha from Texas A&M.

Wacha, who was selected 19th overall, was 9-1 with a 2.06 earned run average in 16 starts with the Aggies this year.

The 20-year-old right hander struck out 116 hitters and only walked 20 batters as a junior.

He reportedly throws a fastball in the mid-90 mph range.  Wacha ranks fourth all-time on Texas A&M’s strikeout list.

Four picks later, the Cardinals snagged outfielder James Ramsey who played collegiate baseball at Florida State and had a .385 batting average.

Scouts say Ramey has some speed and could play center field or second base, but none of his tools ‘jump off the page.’
