ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- For the more than 212,000 area children living in poverty, basic items like shoes and clean clothes are considered luxuries.
The "Little Bit Foundation," a non-profit started in 2001, provides new clothing, shoes, coats and hygiene products for students in need.
The program began in response to a request from an inner-city school teacher, but has grown to serve 14 schools in St. Louis.
Teachers fill out order forms for children in need, and volunteers with the foundation fill the orders and deliver the items to the school.
Clay Elementary Principal Donna Owens said the foundation has had a "huge impact" on the school's attendance record and test scores.
