East St. Louis, IL (KMOV.com) -- Police have identified the people found dead in a home with two unharmed children inside.

Authorities say Bennie Thomas, 28, and Antoinette Blanton-Thomas, 25, were the two victims found on the 600 block of North 23rd street. Police believe the husband shot his wife in the chest before he shot himself in the chest. The St. Clair County Coroner says the shooting occurred sometime Thursday.

Police say they found a pistol near the bodies. They believe the wife had purchased it earlier this year.

The two were discovered when family members came to check on them after they hadn't heard from them in a few days. Their children, a 3-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl, were not injured but were found covered in blood. They were taken to Children's Hospital examined and released to family members.

The investigation is still ongoing.
