EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV) -- Police are investigating after two people were found dead in East St. Louis on Friday.

Authorities said officers found two people in their 20s dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the 600 block of N. 23rd Street.

Two young children – a 1-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy – were also found covered in blood. They were transported to the hospital and are expected to be OK.

Police said the bodies were found after concerned relatives went to check on the victims because she had not heard from them for a few days.

Police would not speculate on how the victims died, but they said appeared as if the bodies had been there for a couple of days.

Authorities would not comment on the condition on the house and if the children were able to find food during the time.

Additional details were not immediately available.
