Schumaker lands on DL, Craig activated

NEW YORK (BaseballStL) -- As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals activated Allen Craig from the DL in place of Skip Schumaker on Friday.

Schumaker lands on the DL for the second time this season due to a hamstring strain he suffered while tracking down a ball against the Atlanta Braves on May 30.

Coincidentally, Craig returns to the lineup for the first time since May 17 when he suffered a hamstring strain.  Manager Mike Matheny told reporters he won’t hesitate to use Craig in the outfield or at first base.

The team also announced that left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.  Freeman allowed only three earned runs in 17.1 innings pitched at Double-A Springfield before his promotion to Memphis.  At Memphis, he allowed three runs in six innings pitched.  Freeman was selected in the 32nd round of the 2008 Draft.
