MADISON COUNTY, Illinois (KMOV) – A Metro-East woman is accused of robbing a 90-year-old woman inside her home in Godfrey, Illinois on Monday.
Linda Towell, 47, was charged with felony robbery.
According to deputies, Towell visited a home in the 4900 block of Westmont Street on Monday around 8 p.m. and told the victim she came to pay her back $40 she had borrowed in 2010 to buy gas.
Deputies said Towell asked the elderly victim to borrow more money for gas and the victim handed a small amount over. While Towell was leaving, she gave the victim a hug and reached into her purse.
The victim said she noticed what was happening and began struggling with Towell. Towell pushed the woman to the ground and fled the scene in a red passenger vehicle.
The victim was treated for injuries and is expected to be OK.
Deputies said they were able to identify the suspect as Towell, who was arrested in May of 2010 for entering a home under false pretenses and stealing money. She was convicted on that theft charge and sentenced to two years in prison. She was paroled in 2011 and is still on parole for the theft.
Deputies said Towell, who was a suspect in other similar incidents, waslocated on Wednesday at a home in the 2400 block of Seminary in Alton.
She was brought into custody for questioning and eventually detained pending formal warrant charges.
Authorities said Towell is linked to two other incidents where she pretended to have sick family members and asked for money to pay for gasoline. Deputies said they discovered Towell was using the money to buy narcotics.
She remains in custody on a $75,000 bond.
