Fairview Heights police hunting for manhole cover thieves

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Il (KMOV.com) -- The Fairview Heights Police Department is investigating the theft of four manhole covers taken from different locations in the city.  The theft was discovered by Fairview Heights Street Department employees Tuesday morning.

Street Department employees discovered manhole covers missing from the following locations:

  • Longacre Drive near the intersection with Newcastle Drive
  • 500 block of St. Clair Road
  • Cherry Drive near the intersection with Joseph Drive
  • 300 block of Frey Lane

Each missing manhole cover will cost the city approximately $185.00 to replace.  However, the police department says it’s mostly concerned with the hazard created for motorists and pedestrians, specifically children.  Investigators are asking anyone having information which might lead to the identification of the person or persons responsible for these thefts to contact the Fairview Heights Police Department at 489-2100.
