ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A year and a half ago, police increased foot patrols on Washington Avenue following a shooting outside a nightclub.
Over the holiday weekend, two separate incidents involving gunfire have business owners calling on police to once again improve security on the downtown strip.
James Velouto, security manager for Rue 13, is one of many calling for more patrols in the area.
“You’ll see maybe one or two on bikes, maybe one in a car, but then when there’s gunshots, they come out of nowhere,” he said. “Where are they at when the activity is going on?”
The St. Louis Police Department told News 4 they had no one available for interview Wednesday.
A spokesperson said they are preparing a plan to address the issue. News 4 spoke with several restaurants and bars, and they confirm they are working with the city and the downtown partnership.
“An entertainment destination is going to attract more people,” said Patrick Russell of the Dubliner. “These are just simple issues that need to be addressed as the city grows.”
The plans are set to be released next week.
