ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Authorities say a 2-year-old child died after being struck by a vehicle in south St. Louis County on Wednesday.
It happened outside the Esse Health Center building in the 13300 block of Tesson Ferry Road around 12:20 p.m.
Police said a woman was unbuckling her daughter from a car seat when the child jumped out and ran into the middle of the parking lot.
Authorities said a man driving through the lot in an SUV was unable to stop in time and hit the toddler.
Medical personnel from inside the building rushed to help the girl, but were too late. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they did not expect charges to be filed in the case.
David E. Hartenbach, MD, Chairman of Esse Health, issed the following statement:
“We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this 21-month-old child in this tragic accident in the parking lot of our office earlier today. This family is well-known to us and we feel as a member of our own family has been lost today.
“Our prayers go out to this family in this very difficult time. Loss of any life is always difficult, but losing a young child like this is particularly tragic. Our hearts are with the parents and other family members during this very hard time.”
