Police said they Cannon shot officer Mike Vernon twice after fleeing the scene of a burglary.
Officials said Florissant police officers responded to a call of a burglary in the 1800 block of Banstead around 3:00 a.m. Monday. While searching the area for the burglary suspects, Officer Vernon encountered Cannon behind a building in the 2800 North Highway 67. Cannon fired several shots, striking Vernon was hit twice.
Vernon suffered serious injuries, but was able to provide a description of the shooter. A K9 unit was brought to the scene and tracked Cannon in the backyard of a house in the Wedgewood subdivision.
Vernon is currently being treated at Depaul Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition with a spinal cord injury. One of the bullets also punctured his lungs.
According to police, officers are still looking for others in connection to the burglary and say more charged could be coming.
