Toddler killed after car loses control, hits iron fence near downtown

St. Louis, MO (KMOV.com) -- A 3-year-old boy died after he was ejected from a vehicle during a wreck near downtown St. Louis Monday morning.

Police said a 24-year-old woman was driving in a white Pontiac Grand Am south in the 6500 block of Broadway around 2 a.m. when she began to experience mechanical difficulties. Police said the victim reportedly tried to stop the vehicle, but stepped on the gas instead of the brake.

The car lost control, hit a curb, overturned and struck an iron fence.

Officers responded to the scene and found the wrecked vehicle, but could not find the victims.

Police said the woman and a 3-year-old boy were later found at a local hospital, where they had been taken by family members.

The 3-year-old, Larenzo Bellchris, suffered severe head trauma in the wreck and was later pronounced dead. The driver suffered serious injuries, but her condition is not known.

It is still unknown if both victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Authorities are still investigating the accident.
