EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV) – The mother and father of Trayvon Martin called for an end to violence at a rally in East St. Louis on Friday.
Trayvon is the 17-year-old who was shot and killed back in February during a confrontation with neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida.
Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, graduated from East St. Louis High School and he says he wants young people who are picking up guns and killing each other to know that death is permanent. He spoke at a “Stop the Violence” rally at North End Missionary Baptist Church around 12 p.m.
Trayvon’s family said they now understand the loss that others in the community feel when their loved ones are killed by the use of guns.
“Trayvon thought it was safe to go outside and this is just not a black community thing it is all over in our community. Trayvon thought he was safe,” said Tracy Martin.
The Martin family did not speak specifically about the death of their son, citing legal reasons.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in Travyon’s death. No trial date has been set in the case.
