East St. Louis to close five elementary schools

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Five East St. Louis elementary schools will close next year, according to a release from the district on Thursday.

District 189 has been plagued with declining enrollment and a decifit of about $12 million.

The district has set up boundaries indicating where students will go next year and says it is trying to minimize disruption to the learning environment.

District officials say populations will not split up and the students will attend school with their current classmates.
