ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- With three days of Fair St. Louis and a home stretch of Cardinals game, drivers can expect some hefty traffic jams in downtown St. Louis this weekend.
Memorial Drive is now shut down in both directions for the fair and will remain closed until Sunday afternoon.
It’s a closure that won’t just affect those headed towards the Arch grounds.
“The key part is come Thursday morning, Memorial Drive is still going to be closed because this event trails to Friday night and Saturday,” said St. Louis City Streets Director Todd Waelterman. “So for Thursday morning and Friday morning, Memorial will be shut down for the morning rush.”
While Memorial is closed for the next few days, there’s good news about I-64. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be open through the weekend, with an exception of westbound lanes starting at Broadway.
MoDOT says good alternate routes downtown include eastbound I-70 at Broadway, westbound I-64 at 9th Street and I-55 at 7th Street.
For thousands of visitors, the best bet will be Metro, which will add more trains and more buses if needed.
But the agency reminds passengers to leave early because there will be lines and parking will be at a premium.
“Hanley is going to fill up fast. Shrewsbury is going to fill up fast on the Missouri side. Fairview Heights and others in Illinois are going to fill up fast,” said Dianne Williams with Metro. “We’ve got thousands of parking places up and down that alignment and people just need to look for the stop that’s convenient for them.”
Also, the Eads Bridge will be closed, but just for the Fourth of July.
