Wainwright looks to get Cards back on track

ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – He hasn’t been dominant in his career against Pittsburgh, but there is no doubt he finds a way to beat them each time out.

Wainwright is 8-3 against the Pirates despite posting a 4.79 ERA in 14 career starts against the NL rival.  The righty actually got his first win this season against the Buccos on May 1 – a game in which he allowed four runs, including two home runs, in seven innings pitched.  It was also the first game the Cardinals offense gave him a single run of support this season.

Since then Wainwright has posted a 5-4 record with a 3.32 ERA in ten starts including a victory in his last outing when he allowed two runs in seven innings pitched against the Royals.  It was also his third consecutive start of seven innings pitched and allowing two runs or less.

The Pirates will send Kevin Correia to oppose Wainwright in the series opener on Friday.

Correia, who has not lost since June 13, has been effective in his last two outings posting a 1-0 record while allowing two earned runs in the last 11.1 innings pitched.

For his career, the 31-year-old righthander is 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched against the Cardinals.
