FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Authorities have identified a man who was pulled from the water after a boating wreck on Rend Lake in Franklin County Tuesday.
Police said two people were traveling in a speeding boat around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when it collided with another boat that had three people onboard.
Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones said one man, identified as 38-year-old Lawrence Smithhart, was thrown from the boat near the Gun Creek Channel and initially went missing. He was pronounced dead after his body was found Wednesday morning.
A woman was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she later died.
Another person suffered minor injuries.
Search teams used sonar technology to scan the lake.
Jones said the identity of the body would be released pending notification of the family.
