ST. LOUIS—A suburban St. Louis man faces up to five years in prison if convicted of a federal indictment’s charges that he directed a laser pointer’s beam at a police helicopter.
The grand jury’s indictment returned June 6 but unsealed this week after 35-year-old Michael Smith’s arrest accuses the O’Fallon man of a felony count of aiming the beam of a laser pointer at an aircraft.
Authorities say the alleged crime happened May 18 and involved a Metro St. Louis Air Support Police helicopter.
Smith also faces a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.
Smith could not be reached for comment Thursday. He has no listed home telephone number, and online court records don’t show whether he has an attorney.
