MIAMI (BaseballStL) – For a moment, Tony Cruz could not have hit his first career home run at a better time than he did on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the effect was quickly wiped out.
With family and friends in attendance at Marlins Park, Cruz smacked a solo home run to left center field in the top of the seventh inning to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead over the Marlins.
Cruz, who got the start in place of Yadier Molina, was 8-for-49 with no RBIs in the previous 20 games this season. It also marked the fourth straight game that a Cardinals catcher had hit a home run (Molina hit the other three).
The lead would quickly disappear in the bottom half of the seventh inning when John Buck and Logan Morrison crushed back-to-back solo home runs to take a 4-3 lead.
The Marlins eventually won 5-3.
