Chalice stolen from St. Peters church recovered at jewelry store; suspect in custody

ST. PETERS, Mo ( -- The St. Peters Police Department has arrested a person accused of stealing a chalice from St. Joachim and Ann Church two weeks ago.

The suspect was identified Sean McDonald, 20, of St. Charles County.

The chalice was located in a jewelry store in St. Charles. The store owner purchased the chalice from the suspect, but did not know the chalice had been reported stolen at the time of the transaction. 

The store owner contacted St. Charles Police Department after seeing a news report about the stolen item. 

McDonald became aware that he was a suspect in the theft and turned himself into Cottleville Fire Department, who then contacted our department. McDonald was taken into custody without incident. 

McDonald admitted to Detectives that he accessed the church unlawfully and stole the chalice.

The chalice was recovered and returned to its owner.  It was valued at approximately $6,000.

McDonald is being held on a $15,000 cash-only bond for Burglary and Stealing Over $500 and will be transported to St. Charles County Jail.
