ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A Caseyville police officer is in the hospital this evening after crashing near downtown St. Louis during a high speed chase with two shoplifters.

A spokesperson at St. Louis University Hospital told News 4 the officer was in fair condition as of Tuesday night.

St. Louis police say the officer suffered head, hip, and ankle and ankle injuries.

Police said officers responded to The Buckle in the St. Clair Square Shopping Center in Fairview Heights around 11:40 a.m. after two suspects grabbed about 20 pairs of pants and ran from the store.

Officers say they hopped into an early 2000s white, two-door Chevrolet Monte Carlo and headed North on Illinois Route 159.

Police said Caseyville officer saw a car matching that description. He chased the car and wound up crashing here near 10th and Chambers Street off Highway 70.

Police say the suspects are both black males. One is about 5-feet-8-inches tall, the other about 6 feet. Both of them have medium builds.

Police also say a third suspect was seen waiting in the driver’s seat of the getaway vehicle.
