Woman sentenced for looting after Joplin tornado

JOPLIN, Mo. -- A woman was sentenced to three years in prison for stealing valuables from a Duquesne home after the southwest Missouri town was hit by a tornado.

Lynette Curry, 27, of Rogers, Ark., was sentenced Monday for felony theft in a plea deal. Burglary and a drug charge were dropped.

The defendant and an alleged accomplice, Gary E. Wright, 35, also of Rogers, Ark., were arrested in Duquesne three days after the May 2011 tornado.

The Joplin Globe reports that police said a vehicle Curry was driving contained hundreds of pieces of jewelry and a computer that was taken from a tornado-damaged home.

Wright is scheduled to go to trial in August on burglary and felony theft charges.
