HOUSTON—Two sons of a Huffman man who killed his neighbor over loud music testified Monday in the sentencing phase of his trial.
A Harris County jury convicted Raul Rodriguez, a retired Baytown firefighter, of murder earlier this month.
Rodriguez killed New Caney P.E. teacher Kelly Danaher in May of 2010 after Rodriguez went outside Danaher’s home armed with a video camera and a gun to tell his neighbor to turn down the music coming from his party.
Rodriguez claimed he shot Danaher and two others in self-defense.
During the trial, neighbors of Rodriguez testified that they had seen Rodriguez rough up his own children.
The sons told jurors their father was strict, but he was always fair and in no way abusive.
"That’s how we played. It was like a high school locker room. That’s how we bonded," said 16-year-old Austin Coleman.
The defense has about a half dozen more witnesses.
Closing arguments in the punishment phase could be heard as early as Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
Rodriguez faces from five to 99 years or life in prison.
