MoDOT: Waste of money to fix deteriorated I-64 ramp

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A deteriorating exit on a major interstate in St. Louis will not be fixed anytime soon because it is a waste of time and money, according to a MoDOT engineer.
Drivers, who exit from eastbound Interstate 64 to Jefferson Avenue, will see the crumbling curbs and a metal plate in the middle of the roadway for a few more months when crews take down the Jefferson Avenue Bridge over I-64 along with its two ramps.

“A waste of money, an inconvenience to the motorists in the area for us to get in, shut down these lanes and these ramps now” Deanna Venker, a MoDOT engineer, said.  “It just makes sense to be a good steward of taxpayers’ money to hold off and do it with our project.”

MoDOT officials acknowledge the curbs are in bad shape, but state once the new Jefferson Avenue Bridge is completed there will be ADA upgrades, sidewalks and bike lanes.

Construction on the bridge will begin early next year and the replacement is expected to take a few months to complete.
