57-Year-old man 'sucker punched' in Central West End

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A 57-year-old man was assaulted while walking in the Central West End Saturday night.

Police said the assault happened in the 4400 block of Lindell Boulevard.  The victim told officers he was standing on the sidewalk when an unknown person punched him once in the face.  The suspect then took off.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a laceration under his eye.

In this area of the Central West End where there are plenty of upscale homes, and residents say the thought of this happening seems pretty far-fetched.

“It’s really surprising,” said Gerald Aggrey, a local resident. “This area’s been safe for as long as I’ve been here, I always try to be careful anyway because I’m living in the city but I haven’t heard too much of things like this happening. I guess it’s kind of concerning.”

News 4 was alerted to this crime by a friend of the victim, and went to police, seeking comment about another instance of what could be classified the ‘knockout game.’

The department’s public information department would only confirm the bare facts of this story---and even called into question the businessman’s story.

He apparently had been drinking before being randomly approached, punched in the head and then taken to the hospital.

Authorities said the victim could not provide a description of the suspect and the suspect did not report anything stolen.

The investigation is ongoing.
