WINFIELD, Mo. (KMOV) – Police say a man who was rescued after his home caught fire in Winfield last week is accused of sexually assaulting someone in relation to the blaze.

Elijah Wisniewski, 31, was charged Monday with sexual assault in Lincoln County Circuit Court.

Police said officers on Thursday saw flames erupting from the back of Wisniewski’s home in the 200 block of Sandra Way. Officers rushed inside and pulled Wisniewski from a bed.

Police said around the same time the fire was discovered, officers got a call from a woman saying Wisniewski had bought her alcohol for her to drink while they were with each other earlier in the day.

According to court documents, Wisniewski sexually assaulted the woman after she had repeatedly told him to stop.

The woman told police she smoked a cigarette just before the assault and flicked the ashes on one of his coffee tables.

The Winfield officer discovered the flames soon after she left, according to police.

Wisniewski remains in custody on a $50,000 cash-only bail.
