Police arrest woman accused of throwing grease on neighbors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested the woman accused of throwing hot grease on neighbors, seriously burning two adults and four children.

Police said Regina Terry, 33, was taken into custody in Monday morning.

Richmond County authorities arrested Terry around 1 a.m. Monday after a tip from CMPD.  Terry was transported back to Mecklenburg County around 3 a.m.
She faces seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and seven counts of malicious maiming.

Terry is accused of throwing a pan of hot grease on neighbors during an argument Sunday.  Six children were burned, but two were treated and returned home the same day.

Two adults and four of the burned children, ages 10, 8, 6, and 22 months, were taken to Chapel Hill’s burn unit for treatment.  One of the adults, a 27-year-old woman, and her son, a 22-month-old boy, had to be airlifted because of their injuries.

Neighbors told NewsChannel 36 Sunday that Terry had an ongoing dispute with the McLean family -- two sisters and their children who lived next door.  The two families live in the Greenhaven Apartments on Polk Street in the Greenville community, off Statesville Avenue north of uptown.

“This is not the first time her daughter has had an altercation with a woman in the neighborhood,” said a woman who asked not to be identified, about Terry’s daughter.

“It never gets physical, they just argue,” said a man named Barry, who asked that his last name not be used.

Neighbors said one of the McLean sisters was on the phone to police about the latest fight when Terry threw hot grease into the McLeans’ apartment, hitting a sister, her mother, and several of the children.

Several of the neighbors heard the children scream.

“They were all crying, trying to rub it off and running around in circles,” said Barry. “They were in real pain.”

The other neighbor described the children’s reactions. “Crying, horrified screaming, skin burning.. peeling,” she said.  “It’s just horrifying.”

The officer who arrived first called an ambulance after noticing the seriousness of the injuries.

Neighbors were in shock as they watched police investigate.  Several said they wanted Terry to face charges.

“She deserves anything she gets for doing that to little kids,” said Bridgette Moorer.  “They didn't have nothing to do with that.”
