ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – Skip Schumaker and Matt Carpenter are making strides to return to the Cardinals active roster within the coming weeks.
Schumaker began his injury rehab assignment playing five innings and going 1-for-2 on Wednesday night. He was placed on the DL on May 31 after straining his right hamstring. The Cardinals plan on having the injured utility man work his way up to more playing time.
Schumaker is hitting .321 in 29 games this season.
Carpenter was set to begin a 20-day injury rehab assignment with Memphis on Thursday night after missing the last 20 games with a right oblique injury.
The left-handed hitting Carpenter was hitting .288 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 39 games this season.
