ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV) – Police in north St. Louis County met with residents Thursday night to discuss crime trends, including auto thefts.
Police said more criminals are stealing vehicles for scrap. They say auto thefts are down about 4 percent this year, but they recently saw a jump of about 25 percent in May.
Lt. Gary Berra, North County precinct watch commander, says thieves are no longer stealing cars for joy rides.
“It’s been a different twist on what used to be an auto crime initiative we’re having to change our resources and look a little differently at patterns, adjusting to what the criminals are doing,” Berra said.
On a positive note, police in north St. Louis County say home break-ins are down more than 30 percent from this time last year.
Police credit alert residents and property managers.
