Raw: Semi-truck hauling crushed cars overturns in Alton

ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Police and clean up crews are on the scene after a semi-truck overturned while taking a corner too fast, spilling scrap metal all over the roadway.

According to Alton Police Chief David Hayes, the accident happened just before 8 a.m.  The driver was exiting the Clark Bridge and turning onto East Broadway in downtown Alton when the accident happened.  The truck was reportedly hauling 10 to 15 crushed cars.  Witnesses describe the scene as a total mess and say there are metal pieces all over the road.

Area roadways have been closed, but the accident does not appear to be having a serious impact on traffic.

Alton Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris said one passenger vehicle was involved in the accident.  That driver was not injured. The driver of the semi-truck was out of the truck by the time emergency crews arrived on the scene.  He was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

Chief Hayes said it will likely take hours to clean up the scene.
