Semi-truck hauling crushed cars overturns in Alton

ALTON, Ill. ( – On Thursday morning, it took crews over three hours to clean up scrap metal that spilled out of an overturned semi-truck in Alton, Illinois.

According to Alton Police Chief David Hayes, the accident happened just before 8 a.m.  The driver was exiting the Clark Bridge and turning onto East Broadway in downtown Alton when the accident happened.  The truck was reportedly hauling 10 to 15 crushed cars.  Witnesses described the scene as a total mess and said there were metal pieces all over the road.

Area roadways were closed while crews cleared the scene, but the closure had a minor impact on traffic.  All roads have since reopened.

Alton Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris said one passenger vehicle was involved in the accident.  That driver was not injured. The driver of the semi-truck was out of the truck by the time emergency crews arrived on the scene.  He was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
