ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – The recent offensive struggles of the St. Louis Cardinals could be attributed to the recent struggles of the team’s leadoff man.
After another hitless performance on Wednesday, Rafael Furcal has seen his season average drop from .319 to .294 during this homestand. Furcal is 0-for-19 after the first five games of the nine-game homestand, all of which come against teams from the American League Central. It should be noted that the Cardinals have scored only seven runs in the last five games.
Furcal has been a pleasant addition to the Cards leadoff spot this year as he leads the NL in RBIs from a leadoff hitter with 29 and trails Ian Kinsler by two for the league lead.
This season, the slick-fielding shortstop is hitting .294 with five home runs. He currently trails the Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki by less than 18,000 votes for the top spot at shortstop in All-Star voting.
