DIXON, Ill. (AP) -- The city of Dixon has filed a lawsuit against its auditors for missing an alleged embezzlement of the small Illinois town’s treasury.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in Lake County Circuit Court against the accounting firm of Sterling, Ill.-based Janis Card Associates and owner Samuel S. Card. The Chicago Tribune reports the lawsuit alleges professional negligence and negligent misrepresentation for overlooking the huge thefts.
A woman who answered the telephone at Janis Card Associates said Samuel Card had no comment on the lawsuit.
Rita Crundwell has pleaded not guilty to wire fraud alleging she stole from the city to pay for a lavish lifestyle and creation of a horse-breeding operation now being overseen by the U.S. Marshal Service.
