Kelly showed control in Major League debut

ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) -- Starter Joe Kelly may have earned himself an extended stay with the Cardinals following a strong outing in his Major League debut on Sunday.

Kelly, who hurled 51 of 79 pitches for strikes, allowed seven hits and only one run in five innings pitched against the Cleveland Indians and likely earned himself a start against the Kansas City Royals on June 16.

The 24-year-old righty may be a legitimate option as a replacement for the injured Jaime Garcia, who is expected to miss at least a month, if the Cardinals don't acquire a starting pitcher via trade.

At Triple-A Memphis, Kelly posted a 2-5 record with 2.86 ERA in 12 starts.
