BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- A central Illinois judge has sentenced a Bloomington man to five years in prison for a residential burglary he committed while dressed as a ninja.
Judge Robert Freitag sentenced 29-year-old Sean Wheeler on Friday. Wheeler is a martial arts enthusiast. The Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/MnLwjK) reports Wheeler told the judge he has been addicted to drugs. Wheeler said in the two months he was free on bond he tried to take advantage of treatment programs. Prosecutors asked for a 7-year sentence.
Police found Wheeler wearing a ninja mask and black clothing when neighbors called authorities to report the burglary.
The judge said he would recommend Wheeler for the Illinois Department of Corrections' rigorous, military-style Impact Incarceration program. If completed Wheeler's sentence could be reduced. Wheeler's defense attorney was pleased with the recommendation.
