ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police have charged a man who was shot after he allegedly pointed a gun at an officer in Wellston on Thursday.
Lamont Lloyd, Jr., 24, was charged Friday with second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and failure to signal when turning.
Police said an officer stopped Lloyd for a traffic violation near the intersection of Page and RM Moore around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities said Lloyd got out of the car and confronted the officer while holding a loading handgun. He refused to put it down after being told three times to drop it, police said.
“As the officer approached the car, the driver got out with a weapon in his hand,” said Rick Eckhard with St. Louis County police. “The officer defended himself and shot the driver.”
Two other passengers in the car were arrested, but later released.
Police said Lloyd was transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, authorities said.
A $50,000 bond was issued to Lloyd, who remains in the hospital.
