HOUSTON (BaseballStL) – Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright was on the same path that his counterpart Johan Santana was on during his last outing on June 1 – the path to a no-hitter.
Except this no-hit bid ended in the 5th inning when Wainwright surrendered a one-out hit to Jason Castro. It was followed by hits from Bud Norris and Jose Altuve to load the bases.
Wainwright got out of the jam by striking out the next two Astros hitters to maintain a 4-0 lead.
He was taken out of the game with one out and two runners on in the 6th inning after allowing two runs to score. After the pitching change, an inherited runner scored to pull the Astros to within one of the lead.
Wainwright’s final line read 5.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, three runs allowed (all earned), one walk issued and eight strikeouts.
